Nagpur Municipal Corporation provides reason for the pollution of river Nag
29 Mar, 2012In a reply to a RTI application, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has informed that untreated sewage and human excreta from over 100 lines was being released directly into the river Nag. It has come to light that the NMC receives almost 540 mld fresh water and generates 450- 500 mld of waste water. Out of the three sewage zones of Nagpur city, the North and south Nagpur zone generate 150 mld sewage water each while central zone contributes 200 mld. However, only the central zone of NMC has a proper underground sewage network with proper waste water treatment plant.
All over India, the sewage collection and conveyance system remains inadequate with little efforts being made to take remedial steps despite knowing the areas where sewage lines were directly polluting a river. This leads to stinking, breeding of mosquitoes and irreparable damage to environment due to pollution of groundwater.
