13 Nov, 2012
As per the information obtained through an application filed under the Right to Information Act, it has come to light that 25 officers of various cadres belonging to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) have been under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and state investigating agencies. These officers have been under probe for land scams, disproportionate assets cases or for favouring private parties. The prior permission of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has to be mandatorily sought as per the rules, before any prosecution is initiated against an IAS officer under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. During the past five years, the DoPT has given sanction for prosecution at least 89 times out of which, 55 occasions were against two officers who have multiple cases against them. An IAS officer of the 1984 batch Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union Territories cadre, has 35 cases against him while a 1989 batch of Odisha cadre has 20 sanctions for prosecution against him.
