About 10 to 20 per cent drugs available in market are fake – RTI reply
Reply to a RTI query had revealed that many drugs used by a common man for day to day use are found "not of standard quality'' and "spurious'' in sample tests conducted by the state drugs controller. The states like Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Gujarat and Maharashtra markets have about 10 to 20 per cent fake drugs. This figure is reduced to less than 5 percent in smaller states like Delhi and Goa.
Adulterated drug samples of some of the commonly used drugs like Pantocid, Enalapril, Dopamine, Paracetamol, Ronflox and Oflomac are found throughout the country.
The RTI reply had further revealed that about 130 drugs of 800 tested randomly were found fake in UP this year, similarly in Tamil Nadu nearly 210 samples tested fake out of the nearly 3,900 randomly checked last year. The value of drugs seized has not come into light, however, at least 110 arrests have been made since last year in cases involving fake drugs seizure and trading.
