Amenities provided to the MP’s over a period of ten years
13 Jan, 2012
Background of the case
On an application seeking detailed information about the various amenities provided to the MPs from Andhra Pradesh during the fourteenth and fifteenth Lok Sabha including the TA and DA reimbursed to them, the PIO invited the appellant to inspect the relevant records which the PIO claimed to be voluminous. On appeal, the First Appellate Authority observed that the compilation of the information desired by the appellant would disproportionately divert the resources of the Lok Sabha Secretariat and, therefore, endorsed the decision of the PIO inviting the appellant to inspect the relevant records.
View of CIC
The Commission observed that there are 42 MPs from Andhra Pradesh. To provide the copies of the TA Bills and all other Bills in respect of various amenities provided to these MPs during a period of 10 years will be very time consuming task looking to the volume of such records. This will obviously divert the resources of the public authority disproportionately. Therefore, the invitation extended by the PIO for inspection of the records is absolutely in order. The Commission observed that if the appellant has such a keen interest to know about the various amenities availed of by the MPs over a period of 10 years, he should find time to inspect the records in the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
