Toilet construction for SC/STs by BBMP stopped due to lack of beneficiaries
22 Nov, 2012The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) or Greater Bangalore Municipal Corporation has stopped the work of toilet construction for the schedule caste and schedule tribe (SC/ST) families in Devasandra ward in Mahadevapura assembly constituency. When enquired about its cause through an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the BBMP has informed that there were no eligible beneficiaries in the area.
The funds for the construction of toilets were approved in 2009-10 and have already been released under the 22.75% scheme. With the stoppage of work of toilet construction, the same cannot be used now for any purpose other than the welfare of the SC/ST. The irony is that the official website of BBMP states that the mentioned area has a population comprising of more than 3,225 SC and more than 380 ST category people. It has been argued that there are many SC/ST families in the ward who qualify to get the benefits of the scheme.
