Are Mumbai cops slum dwellers?
An application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed the poor living conditions of the Mumbai police personnel. According to the statistics, out of the total number of police inspectors and constables 40,117, the number of police inspectors and constables living in slums in 2005 was 4,494. In 2006, the figures rose to 4,834 out of a strength of 40,608. However, there has been a decline in the number to 1,343 personnel living in slums in 2010.
The statistics were put before the Bombay High Court in connection with a public interest litigation demanding basic water facilities for all slum dwellers.
