Decrease in water production at DJB water treatment plants
30 May, 2013An application was filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking information about the production of water from Delhi Jal Board’s water treatment plants (WTPs). The query sought the data for the past ten years.
The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) manages its daily supply through water treatment plants at Chandrawal, Wazirabad, Haiderpur I&II, Nangloi, Bhagirathi and Sonia Vihar. Out of these, only Chandrawal and Wazirabad water treatment plants responded to the RTI application.
The reply shows that total water production at Chandrawal has come down from 36,860 million gallons in 2003-04 to 33,623.93 million gallons in 2012-13 – a decrease of more than 3,000 million gallons. A DJB official stated that as the Chandrawal plant was built in 1936, its efficiency is low but the rehabilitation of the plant is underway. Similarly, the data in the reply also showed that water production at Wazirabad has decreased from 44,589 million gallons in 2003-04 to 44,135 million gallons in 2012-13 with a net decrement of 454 million gallons.
