Traffic data for levy of toll challenged
20 Jan, 2012
The move of the state government to charge tolls on eight national highways passing through Bikaner, Nagaur, Churu, Sriganganagar and Jodhpur has met with resistence. The minimum criteria for developing any stretch of road on PPP model and thereafter charging toll is that traffic on these roads should be more than 10,000 Passenger Car Units (PCU). The data regarding traffic on these national highways obtained through RTI has been challenged. A survey by the National Highways Authority of India had revealed a figure of more than 10,000 PSUs on all these roads whereas it has been claimed that in reality the traffic load is less than half of it.
