Use of RTI for reviving a case lying dormant for 11years
9 Jan, 2012
An applicant’s relentless quest of information under the RTI Act has led a court to issue summons to police to explain their failure in pursuing the matter and to the accused to answer charges of their criminal culpability. Mr. Sumit Dass, the Metropolitan Magistrate issued summons to a bakery shop owner to answer charges in case of a death of a 24-year-old girl allegedly by food-poisoning 11 years ago due to the consumption of stale sandwiches sold by them. The court also asked the police to explain alleged irregularities in the probe, including a move by police to seek the court's approval to cancel the FIR in the case.
