Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (LMC) suffering a loss of crores of rupees
23 Jan, 2013A reply to an RTI application has revealed that the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (LMC) has been suffering a loss of crores of rupees in terms of revenue collected as house tax. The LMC had failed to assess house tax of buildings in block 2 of Zone A ever since its formation over 30 years ago. It is noteworthy that the said area is situated beside the headquarters of LMC and has many important buildings including hotels, restaurants and eateries. The applicant had sought to know the house tax collected by the LMC in this particular block of the city. While replying to the RTI application, the LMC has stated that they had done a partial assessment of the block in 1999-2000 and that during this assessment the entire block was not covered. The LMC refused to divulge the details of the area surveyed and the names of officials who were responsible for the tax collection in that area. The house tax department had confirmed that LMC could have earned revenue in crores if they had conducted a proper assessment of all the buildings in block 2 of Zone A.
