Medical negligence a cause of children’s death at Delhi hospital
30 May, 2013The reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that medical negligence was among the causes of large number of child deaths at Kalawati Saran Children Hospital in New Delhi.
The reply from National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) states that the forensic expert appointed by the commission had analysed the treatment records of 20 children who died in the hospital selected at random from all the child deaths in the hospital in past five years. It says that the expert has found six out of the 20 cases where the death was caused by medical negligence.
Earlier, a separate RTI query had revealed that 10,081 kids have died in Kalawati Saran Children Hospital in a span of 55 months at an average of 6 children dying a day implying that 17% of child deaths in Delhi happened in just one hospital.
The NHRC had formed a committee to look into the extremely high cases of child death in the said hospital.
