More than 3 infants expire daily in Kalawati Saran Children Hospital
15 Jul, 2014Reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that more than 1,300 infants have died in the Kalawati Saran Children Hospital of New Delhi during the last one year. The reply shows that from January 2013-2014, 1,345 infants have died due to various diseases like Diarrhea, Tuberculosis, Tetanus, Anemia, Malnutrition, Pneumonia, acute bronchitis and Neonatal Sepsis. It implies that more than three deaths of infants occur in the hospital everyday. The hospital had come under the shadow of criticism for non-functioning ventilators.
The monthly break-up of fatalities show - 92 lost their lives in January 2013, 87 in February, 78 in March, 87 in April, 115 in May, 77 in June, 85 in July, 159 in August, 113 in September, 136 in October, 154 in November, and 67 in December. 75 children died in January 2014.
The high incidence of deaths points to the need for a study to look into the avoidable causes of death for taking remedial measures.
