More than 60% of burglaries in Thane remain unsolved

The reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that large number of crimes involving chain-snatching, burglary, theft and dacoity conducted in Thane in past three years are lying unsolved.
The reply to the application stated that a total of 12,427 such crimes were registered in all the five police zones of Thane between January, 2011 and August, 2013. Out of these, only 4,937 cases have so far been detected indicating that over 60% of cases are still unsolved. The statistics, provided in the reply, showed that only 411 of 1,065 burglary cases reported in 2011 were solved. In 2012, 401 cases from 1,103 reported ones were detected while in 2013 only 319 burglary cases detected out of 978 cases reported till August.
However, when it came to dealing with crimes against women, Thane Police has recorded phenomenal 93% crime detection rate. Out of 1,797 cases of dowry deaths, molestation, sexual harassment, etc. registered in past three years the police was able to detect as many as 1,672 cases.
If the situation of unsolved cases is so high even in an urban place such as Thane, where the people as well as media is vigilant, one can only guess the cases which remain unsolved in other parts of the country.
