11 Aug, 2014
Reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that between January 2009 and May 31, 2014, the city of Mumbai witnessed 59 gang rapes. The Mumbai Crime Branch records indivates that the heinous crime goes unabated in the city.
·
The age of victims ranged between 3 years and 55 years.
·
Almost half of the victims happen to be minors (31).
·
Three victims ranged between the age group of 3 and 8 years.
·
There were 8 gang rapes in the calendar year 2012 while the number rose to 18 in the year 2013. The calendar year 2014 has already witnessed registration of seven gang rape cases till May 31.
It implies that Mumbai has the dubious distinction of registering an average of 10 gang rape cases every year. Critics have pointed that the actual number of cases would be much higher as the number of cases which are unregistered is large. The situation is not likely to be any better in other cities which calls for stringent action to prevent such cases.
