National Human Rights Commission summons the Chief Secretary of Tripura
27 Jan, 2013The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued summons under Section 13 of Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 requiring the Chief Secretary of Government of Tripura to appear personally before the NHRC on 1st March, 2013 at 11AM. It is regarding a violation of the directions issued by the Commission acting on the complaint of MANAB, a Human Rights Organization, on the attempt to commit murder of an RTI activist cum human rights defender namely Sanjit Debbarma and consequent police inaction to protect the activist in Tripura.
In its directive dated 20/07/12, the NHRC asked the Chief Secretary to send a thorough and substantive response on all points raised in its proceedings in relation to the complaint relating to the attempt to commit murder of Sanjit Debbarma and consequent police inaction to protect the activist in remote Tripura and the consequent violation of the directive dated 21.09.2012 wherein the Commission has cautioned to resort to coercive measure in case of failure of the chief secretary to respond to its directive. In the Commission in its order stated that if the report is received on or before 1.3.2013, then the personal appearance of the Chief Secretary, Govt. of Tripura shall stand dispensed with.
