Subject: Emphasizing the Need to Uphold the Essence of the RTI Act to Enhance Accountability
Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my strong belief in the transformative power of the Right to Information (RTI) Act and to emphasize that if its true essence is sincerely upheld, it can significantly enhance transparency and accountability in our country.
The RTI Act, enacted in 2005, was a landmark step toward empowering citizens and strengthening democratic governance. It created a legal pathway for individuals to seek information from public authorities, thereby promoting openness in the functioning of the government. However, over the years, there has been growing concern about the dilution of its implementation and increasing reluctance on the part of authorities to share information in a timely and meaningful manner.
If the principles of the RTI Act—namely transparency, proactive disclosure, and ease of access—are sincerely implemented at all levels of governance, it would not only deter corruption but also instill a culture of responsibility among public officials. The citizens' right to know is not just a legal provision but a vital instrument for participatory democracy. When institutions operate under the watchful eyes of an informed public, accountability naturally follows.
I urge the RTI Foundation of India to continue its valuable work in spreading awareness and advocating for the effective use and preservation of the RTI Act. Strengthening the Act's implementation is not merely a legal necessity but a democratic imperative.
Thank you
Sincerely,
Shubham Kapoor
