No investigation by the Maharashtra Lokayukta in the 1,680 complaints received
18 Jan, 2013The reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act by former Information Commissioner at the Central Information Commission (CIC) Mr. Shailesh Gandhi has shown that since 2007, the Maharashtra Lokayukta has received 1680 complaints/ allegations of corruption under section 9(1)(b) of Lokayukta Act but no investigation has been launched in any case. The section 9(1)(b) of Lokayukta Act deals with allegations by persons 'other than public servants'.
The reply to the RTI application further informs that only six reports (three each in 2010 and 2011) were submitted to the competent authority recommending action out of which action was taken in two cases. In the two reports sent to the Governor, the Lokayukta said that it was not satisfied by the action.
Maharashtra has a Lokayukta since 1972, whose working has been questioned by activists.
