Non payment of tax - BCCI has Rs. 354 crore pending as tax arears

The reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that the richest sports body of India, the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI), has huge amount pending with it as tax arrears.
The reply from the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax in Mumbai’s Central Circle states that BCCI has total income tax arrears of Rs. 354 crore. The arrears pertain to assessment years from 2007-08, when the income tax department withdrew its exemption given to BCCI, to 2010-11.
The data provided in the reply shows that the cricketing body had Rs. 42.11 crore due in taxes for 2007-08. The corresponding figures for 2008-09 and 2009-10 come out to be Rs. 74.32 crore and Rs. 70.72 crore respectively. Similarly, for 2010-11, the total income of BCCI was assessed as Rs. 874.18 crore against which Rs. 337.11 crore was demanded as tax. However, only Rs. 170 crore was collected out of total tax demand making the tax arrears to stand at Rs. 167.11 crore. The reply also states that the tax assessment proceedings for assessment years 2011-12 and 2012-13 are still to be completed.
