Panel to meet today to fill the vacant posts at the CVC and CIC
1 Jun, 2015
A meeting of a three member Committee led by the Prime Minister is likely to meet today at the residence of the Prime Minister to select the candidates for the vacant posts in the Central Information Commission (CIC) and Central Vigilance Commission (CVC). While Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge shall be the member of both the selection panels, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley shall be a part of the panel for the selection of the Chief Information Commissioner and Information Commissioner while Home Minister Rajnath Singh shall be the third member of the panel for the selection of CVC. Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh is likely to assist in the selection of the candidates.
After the tenure of the erstwhile Chief Information Commissioner Rajiv Mathur ended on 22nd August, 2014, the CIC has been working without a Chief Information Commissioner. There are ten posts of information commissioners in the CIC out of which three are vacant. There are over 200 applicants, including all seven information commissioners, for the post of the Chief Information Commissioner and more than 550 people have applied for the post of information commissioners. The term of Central Vigilance Commissioner Pradeep Kumar and vigilance commissioner J M Garg had ended last year and about 130 applicants are in fray for the two posts.
The delay in the selection at the CIC has invited criticism by the activists and a PIL was filed in the matter with the Delhi High Court which had taken up monitoring of the appointment. One meeting of the selection panel was held on May 23 which remained inconclusive. Will today’s meeting lead to some results?
