Post of head librarian in Madras University library vacant for five years
16 Jun, 2013The reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that the Madras University library has remained headless for past five years.
The reply, provided by the University of Madras, states that the post of head librarian in the university library has been vacant since January 2008. The reply also says that efforts have been made to fill the vacancy. However, the specifics of the efforts have not been provided in the reply. For now, an in-charge librarian is looking after the library which, according to its website, fulfills the needs of students and faculty of 12 schools of study, in addition to that of the industry.
The library is the point of creating knowledge and needs to be equipped and provided appropriate resources which unfortunately do not seem to be the situation. But the Vice Chancellor of the university has assured that top most priority would be accorded to the appointment of a librarian and the vacancy will be filled within one and half months.
