Is proposed Kalpasar dam unsafe for Mithivirdi nuclear project?
10 May, 2013The reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that the proposed Kalpasar dam project might be a cause to worry about the upcoming Mithivardi nuclear power plant concerning its safety in the case of an earthquake.
The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), in its reply to the RTI query, has sent its site selection report for the nuclear plant. The report recommended a detailed study to examine the probable effects of Kalpasar dam over the nuclear site in case of a high magnitude earthquake. The report, dated June 28, 2007, had projected the fear of nuclear plant sedimentation, flooding due to dam rapture and reservoir induced seismicity as the Kalpasar dam is located over deep silted fault.
DAE has also attached a letter it sent to the nuclear projects division of the Ministry of Environment alleging that the reports apprehensions were not incorporated into the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited's (NPCIL) environment impact assessment (EIA) for the proposed project.
