Recommendations of Human Rights Commission ignored
10 Dec, 2012Between April 2012 and October 2012, West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC), under its newly appointed chairperson, Justice (retired) Asok Kumar Ganguly, had made 27 recommendations to the government of West Bengal.
As per section 18 (e) of the Human Rights Protection Act, the concerned government or the authority has to forward its comments on the report including action taken or proposed to be taken, to the commission within one month. But the state government has not done anything in this regard.
Association for Protection for Democratic Rights (APDR) has now filed an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking the details of such recommendations. The sought information include the number of recommendations from , WBHRC since April 2012, issues involved, action taken by the government on the recommendations including those which recommended punitive/disciplinary action against police or government officials, cases where the government has declined to take action, etc.
