RTI activist beaten to death in Jodhpur, Rajasthan
12 Oct, 2013
In an incident which is first of its kind, RTI Activist from Jaisal Village in Phalodi of Jodhpur District 35 year old Shambu Singh Bishnoi breathed his last in a hospital after being beaten severely by the sarpanch of the village and his aides.
Shambhu Singh Bishnoi was under constant threat from the sarpanch after the release of information gathered by him regarding the corruption in MNREGA and ‘Sajal’ scheme (which amounted nearly Rs. 50 lakhs) leading to an enquiry by the Anti Corruption Bureau, Rajasthan. A personal enquiry was also initiated against him. This is in addition to the suppression of information by the same sarpanch revealed by an RTI application filed by Shambhu Singh Bishnoi leading to issue of notice by the High Court.
As per the police Shambhu Singh Bishnoi went to apply for Aadhar card, while coming back from the camp he was kidnapped by the sarpanch Sodha Ram and his aides, ie. his brothers Manohar Ram and Jagmal, two sons Satpal and Ugrasen and a cousin Radha Kishan. They took him to a nearby place and beat him. The police have already arrested three of the accused and search for the rest is on.
It is noteworthy that activist Aruna Roy along with her comrades launched the RTI movement from Rajasthan which eventually was implemented through-out the country.
