RTI reply - 10,647 Indians convicted abroad for criminal offences
27 Oct, 2012In reply to a query under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has informed that during the last five years, 10,647 Indians had been convicted in various countries for criminal offences. Out of these, 29 Indians were given the death sentence for criminal offences. For those sentenced to death, the United Arab Emirates (21) heads the list followed by Kuwait (6) Indonesia (1) and Iran (1).
2 Indians were awarded capital punishment for offences punishable under the Narcotics Act and Drugs Act while 27 were involved in murder coupled with other offences like theft, abduction, burning, hiding body, adultery and intoxication.
Amongst the list of countries where Indians were convicted, UAE (4,315) followed by Bangladesh (2,008), Kuwait (1,161), China (673), Oman (429), UK (426) were the countries where the number of Indians convicted were more than 250.
