RTI reveals principals of 17 Engg. Colleges don’t have basic qualification
23 May, 2013An application was filed with the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) seeking information about the colleges under the university whose principals didn’t satisfy the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) norms.
In the reply from the university, the applicant got a list of seventeen such colleges where the principals don’t possess the prerequisite basic engineering degrees. The documents also revealed that when the university authorities had correspondences with these colleges, many colleges came up with surprisingly harsh replies contending that the posting was valid as AICTE didn’t object.
However, though the Local Inquiry Committee of the VTU has been inspecting colleges to check whether they are abiding by its instructions, no action has been initiated on the part of VTU authorities against the erring colleges.
AICTE made it mandatory in 2006 that principals of all engineering colleges must have basic under graduate and post graduate degrees in engineering and technology. Further, as per 2007 resolution of VTU, principals of all affiliated colleges must have under graduate and post graduate degree in a faculty in which the university awards basic degrees.
