Scholarship yet to be awarded to over 3000 dalit students
25 May, 2013An application was filed with the department of social justice of Gujarat in May, 2010 under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking to get information regarding the scholarship for dalit students in Ahmedabad.
The application was rejected by the department but a second application was filed a month later but the sought information was provided to the applicant only after three years and that too on the intervention of the state information commission (SIC). The reply states that there are as many as 3,125 dalit students in Ahmedabad district who have not received their scholarship amount from the state government. The data provided in the reply says that scholarship applications of 1,613 students are still pending while another 1,512 students were denied the scholarship citing lack of funds in the respective institutes.
The RTI reply pertains to data from only ITI, science, arts, engineering and medical colleges. The information regarding the dalit children studying in schools was not provided in the reply. The reply also doesn’t mention the amount of scholarships allocated to the students.
