Is the UPA indifferent to RTI and NREGA?
20 Jan, 2013
The Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 and NREGA are the flagship programs of the UPA government and have been showcased as an achievement. It has been often said in the corridors of power that the RTI Act could be enacted only because of the blessings of the UPA Chairperson Ms. Sonia Gandhi.
A release issued by a gathering of organisations associated with information and employment rights and duly signed by Roy and other activists has said "The UPA government, having passed the laws about Right to Information and NREGA, is now indifferent towards their implementation”. The release further says that "No action has been taken against the corruption cases having been exposed in NREGA. It appears government is bent upon abolishing NREGA." Ms. Roy is a member of the National Advisory Council (NAC) which is headed by UPA Chairperson.
