Is use of banned drugs rampant amongst the sportspersons of the country?
21 Dec, 2013In a reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) the official anti-doping agency has revealed the figures of athletes who were found to have violated Anti Doping Rules. The statistics reveals that the 500 sportspersons have failed drug tests conducted by NADA between January 2009 and July 2013. Most of these sportspersons were weightlifters and track-and-field athletes. The reply further reveals that 423 athletes were slapped with sanctions by the Anti Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADDP).
The statistics indicates that the use of banned performance enhancing drugs is rampant amongst the sportspersons of the country. With an average of nearly two sanctions per week, there is an urgent need to educate the sportspersons about the pitfall of the use of such drugs.
