15 individuals were shortlisted for the post of information commissioner at Central Information Commission out of hundreds of applications received. The name of these persons and their brief description is given below. A committee headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh approved five names for the appointment of information commissioners (ICs) out of these 15.

Ms. Manjula Prashar, Indian Postal Service officer (IPoS 1975 batch) was the Member (Operations) before taking over as Secretary (Posts). She succeeded Ms. Radhika Doraiswamy (IPoS..74) who retired as Secretary Posts on October 31, 2011.

Worked as Joint Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries and later as Additional Secretary, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions before taking over as Secretary Tribal Affairs

4. Mr. Girish Chandra Chaturvedi
IAS, Uttar Pradesh - 1977
Served as the Secretary of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and has worked in Energy, Banking & Insurance, Finance & Accounts (Tax, Finance Comptroller for CWG), Medical, Textile, and Planning.
Education - M.Sc. in Physics from Allahabad University, and M.Sc in Economics (Social Policy and Planning in Developing Countries) from London School of Economics and Political Science, UK.
5. Dr. Mritunjaya Sarangi
IAS, Tamilnadu – 1977
Worked as special secretary in the Cabinet secretariat before taking over as Labour Secretary in 2011.
Education: PhD degree from US on demography; LLB and MA in political science
6. Mr. P.K. Mishra - Secretary DoPT
IAS, Uttar Pradesh - 1976
Worked as a joint secretary in defence ministry and in 2006, he became an additional secretary and financial adviser in the home ministry. Later, he moved to DoPT as an Establishment Officer and before joining as steel secretary. He was conferred with “Distinguished Fellow of IOD (Institute of Directors)” for the year 2011.
Education: A post graduate in economics.
7. Mr. Sanjeev Kumar Tripathi

Headed the Aviation Research Centre (ARC), air surveillance division of R&AW before becoming the chief of RAW – Research and Analysis Wing. First RAW chief from the RAS (RAW Allied Services) cadre
The son-in-law of Former RAW chief, G.S. Bajpai, and comes from a family of Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.

Her weekly RTI column has been published on the website whispersinthecorridors.com since 2008 apart from articles in other publications.
She imparts training to many organisations including training of 'Master Trainers' regarding the RTI Act and has been involved in the running of the site www.rtifoundationofindia.com since 2011.
Books: "Right to Information - Law and Practice" and "PIO's guide to RTI" based on a detailed study of over 50,000 CIC orders and hundreds of judgments of the Courts. Currently working on a "RTI Case Digest"
She was shortlisted for the post of Information Commission and her name was duly considered during the meeting of the appointment committee headed by the Prime Minister on Feb 23, 2012.
