Excessive work pressure causes 45% of total deaths of policemen – RTI reply
18 Feb, 2013An application was filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking to get the information about all the 1341 policemen in Mumbai who died during the period 2002-2012.
The reply to the application reveals that during the said period, 168 policemen stationed in various departments of Mumbai police committed suicide which corresponds to roughly 12% of the total deaths. Further, 449 died of ailments caused by stress like heart attack i.e. 33% of total deaths.
This statistics indicate that nearly 45% of the policemen die because of the stress which may be attributed to overwork and job pressure. The joint commissioner of police (crime) reportedly agreed with the findings and has stated that long working hours, lack of sleep caused due to shortage of manpower combined with poor dietary habits lead to such diseases in policemen.
